All international students who are enrolled in a Coronavirus-ready Designated Learning Institution will be allowed to travel to Canada as of October 20, 2020. With this good news, we can start our new year also. Canadian education institutions have been hard at work to make sure that students do not face any problems when they come back to campus. Plans include health and safety protocols, approved by the provincial health authority which means that now educational institutions may safely open their doors. It is a testament to how well Canada has handled the pandemic.

Before coming to class, international students would need to quarantine themselves for 14 days. However, IRCC has warned against making any arrangements of travel if they do not meet the necessary safety requirements.
Come, study in Canada
All international students would have to abide by the following protocols to enter Canada and study in a Coronavirus-ready DLI.
Requirements for International Students in Canada are:
- Be one of the following:
- Is an international student with a valid study permit or who had a study permit approved before March 18, 2020
- Traveling Directly from the US
- Must be traveling for an essential purpose
Non-Discretionary Purposes Valid as a Student
- Need to be in Canada for the program (for laboratory work, workshops, similar)
- Can’t study online from my home country because of internet restrictions or bandwidth limitations
- Can’t participate in live online classes from the home country because of difference in time zones
- School isn’t offering online study options
- Already live in Canada
After reaching border services, you would need to submit proof that the reasons you are coming to Canada are not by choice or option. You can be asked the following:
- Because of what reason are you coming to Canada?
- Are you able to complete a 14-day quarantine period when you arrive on Canadian soil?
- Do you have adequate time to complete your quarantine before you physically start to attend classes?
- Is it possible for you to start studying online during your quarantine?
What should I show Border Services as an International Student?
- A valid study permit
- A port of entry letter of introduction that shows you are approved to study on or before March 18, 2020, if coming from any other country
- A port of entry letter of introduction that shows you were approved for a study permit if you’re coming from the US
Can my Family Members join me?
Only essential travel can be conducted by family members in Canada. For example, spouses, common-law partners, dependants, parents, and legal guardians can come with you to Canada.
What if I haven’t applied for a study permit to Canada?
The pandemic has caused a delay in the processing of study permits and therefore, they are not being processed at usual processing times. The IRCC has changed the application process for the duration of the pandemic and the processing of applications is being done differently now.
Applications for a study permit will have to be done online.
International students are being asked to supply as many documents as possible along with a letter of explanation for missing documents.
Completed applications would be given the highest priority in processing.
